The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John Hollingsworth (ASN: 35568652), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 December 1944, in Belgium. During a vicious engagement with the enemy, intense fire was received and the order was given to withdraw to alternate positions. One member of an anti-tank gun crew was seriously wounded and was unable to take cover from the enemy fire. Staff Sergeant Hollingsworth, observing his plight, crawled under the continuing fire to the wounded man. Then, with the aid of another comrade who had come forward, he removed the man to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Hollingsworth, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
