The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Marshall Augustus Hogins (ASN: 20457894), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 September 1944, in Belgium. Technical Sergeant Hogins was acting as the leader of a platoon when it encountered an enemy roadblock that subjected the platoon to heavy small arms fire and grenades, pinning the men to the ground. Technical Sergeant Hogins fearlessly took command of the situation, and while his men were taking cover along the sides of the road, he stood in plain view of the enemy and directed bazooka fire upon the roadblock. Technical Sergeant Hogins fearlessly continued directing the attack from his exposed position until he was hit and fatally wounded, but his outstanding heroism and complete devotion to duty enabled his men to eliminate the roadblock and permit the main body of troops to continue its advance. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Hogins, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
