Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 194 (July 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Marion R. Hobson (ASN: 15344140), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. During the assault crossing of the Roer River, Private First Class Hobson’s assault boat overturned, flinging him and another man into the icy river. After gaining the bank, Private First Class Hobson saw his comrade still struggling in the water. Despite the treacherous water and heavy enemy mortar fire, he unhesitatingly plunged back into the river and towed the man to safety. Private First Class Hobson’s heroic action saved his drowning comrade’s life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Hobson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
