The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Robert M. Hobgood (ASN: 0-425719), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. When Captain Hobgood’s company had been sent into support troops against a heavy counter-attack by enemy armor and infantry, his men became disorganized under the weight and intensity of the enemy action. Captain Hobgood personally took charge of the situation, reorganizing his company and holding their line. Seeing many of his men wounded on the battlefield, he personally, without help, and with complete disregard for his own safety, carried the wounded men by hand to the battalion aid station, four hundred yards away. In all, Captain Hobgood made six trips evacuating his wounded men. Such heroic courage, devotion to duty, and loyalty to the men under his command reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
