The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Roy Hoahtewa (ASN: 38000667), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 158th Infantry Regiment, 43d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 25 January 1945. As his company was attacking a hill under fire from well camouflaged snipers. Sergeant Hoahtewa, a squad leader, advanced toward the Japanese positions to draw fire and locate them. Until killed by enemy shells, he directed fire from his exposed position only 75 yards from the enemy. His courage and effort to duty with utter disregard for his own safety was exemplary of the highest military traditions and was an inspiration to his comrades. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
