The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Raymond D. Hill (ASN: 0-22645), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 7 July 1944 to 12 August 1944, in France. Major Hill was serving as the Operations Officer on the staff of an infantry commander. During several tactical operations, Major Hill, at the risk of his live, voluntarily left the comparative safety of the command post to personally direct front line operations, exhorting and encouraging his troops when attacks threatened to bog down. His initiative, personal bravery, and professional skill have been a material contribution to the successful combat operations of his unit. The determined leadership and devotion to duty displayed by Major Hill are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
