The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Martin L. Hill (ASN: 38159235), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 August 1944, in France. Sergeant Hill was assigned to duty with an infantry force engaged in a bitter struggle with numerically superior enemy troops who were making a vigorous counter-offensive in an attempt to divide American Forces in France. In the course of the action, an enemy patrol got in the rear of Sergeant Hill’s position, and began to fire on him and his squad. Sergeant Hill leaped out of his foxhole and ran toward a nearby tank destroyer. He was mistaken for an enemy and fired upon but continued to work his way forward. He notified friendly forces of the situation and covered by fire from their guns, worked his way along to outflank the patrol from where he forced it to withdraw. By his daring and aggressive initiative, he saved an important command post from probable destruction. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Hill, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
