The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John L. Hidley, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company A, 25th Armored Engineer Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, during the period 27 July 1944 to 1 May 1945. Despite the difficulties of terrain, observation and proximity of the enemy, Staff Sergeant Hidley gained information critically needed for the advance of his platoon. He went to the point of the column to check the strength of bridges and see if they were set for possible demolition. He often made daylight and night reconnaissance of blown bridges. His accurate information was instrumental in securing necessary materials and prompt repair of damage, thereby aiding the progress of the Task Force. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
