The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Samuel W. Hendrix (ASN: 0-2005235), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. While advancing toward its objective, Second Lieutenant Hendrix’s platoon was pinned down by intense enemy fire. Realizing that the only way to escape the fire was to continue forward, Second Lieutenant Hendrix gallantly rose to his feet and called to his men to follow. This courageous example so inspired the men that they followed him unhesitatingly in the face of the fire and successfully seized their objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Hendrix, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
