The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James L. Helms (ASN: 0-1312764), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. First Lieutenant Helms maintained an observation post in a house despite his position being fully exposed and subject to tank and artillery fire, which crushed building about him. He adjusted several battalions of artillery on the enemy when he observed their movement. First Lieutenant Helms’ accurate direction prevented the enemy from moving and regrouping, thereby aiding materially in the successful attack of his comrades. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Helms, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
