Navy Federal Credit Union

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Cavalry), [then First Sergeant] John Heithaus (ASN: 0-2055214), United States Army, for gallantry in action while attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily in 1943. When high ground overlooking a town was captured, Lieutenant Heithaus organized patrols and personally led them in a search for snipers. His gallant leadership, initiative and fearlessness resulted in the capture of many of the enemy and valuable equipment. Second Lieutenant Heithaus’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
