Lieutenant Colonel Heiss led a reconnaissance patrol through a heavily boob-trapped area in Belgium. He was seriously wounded in the operation, but despite his wounds, gave detailed information to the successful completion of the mission. A German officer and four enlisted men were captured by his patrol. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Heiss, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
