The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Marvin P. Heery, Jr. (ASN: 0-419767), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1944, in Germany. During a large scale offensive against the enemy, when his field artillery battalion was delivering supporting fires to an Infantry assault force, communications were of vital importance in order that fire directions could be transmitted from observers to battery positions. The enemy was subjecting the entire area to heavy artillery fire and the task of maintaining communications was an extremely hazardous one. As Communications Officer for the Headquarters Battery, Captain Heery constantly risked his life to supervise the establishment and maintenance of wire communications. He personally went with his communications teams to aid them with their work. When the immediate area in which they were working was suddenly subjected to a concentrated attack, Captain Heery sought shelter for his men and remained in the open until he had found a place of safety for each of them before he sought cover for himself. By this unselfish display of leadership, Captain Heery was wounded, but his men survived the ordeal with few casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Heery, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
