The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private First Class John O. Hawkins (ASN: 34351510), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 26 June 1944 Private Hawkins drove his truck through the streets of Cherbourg, disregarding constant and heavy enemy fire to evacuate several American and enemy wounded.
