The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Elwood D. Hartwick (ASN: 39415470), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company F, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 5 July 1944 to 8 July 1944 in France. Throughout the period, Technician Fifth Grade Hartwick treated and evacuated a substantial number of wounded men, many times under intense enemy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire, and at all times in a courageous manner which inspired all who saw him. During the final phase of the attack he was the sole remaining medical aid man in his company. Enemy artillery had inflicted seven casualties, five of them fatal, in his immediate area. Without regard for his own safety he made his way through the barrage and administered medical aid to the two who were still living and then evacuated them one at a time. His exemplary courage and zealous fidelity to duty reflect highest credit on himself and the military forces of the United States.
