The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alvin Alric Norles (ASN: RA-18864490), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam. On 1 January 1969, Private First Class Norles was serving as point man for his company’s right file during a reconnaissance in force operation north of Lai Khe. While moving through dense vegetation, the lead element, guided by Private First Class Norles, was suddenly subjected to a vicious fusillade of small armsfire from an insurgent force positioned to the front and left flank. During the initial burst of enemy fire, he suffer ed a gunshot wound to the left thigh. Realizing that the left file point man was seriously wounded, Private First Class Norles dauntlessly maneuvered to the aid of his wounded comrade. Ignoring his own serious injury and the withering hail of hostile rounds, he returned heavy and accurate suppressive fire as he crawled forward and pulled the wounded man to safety. When help arrived, he assisted in bringing the casualty to a location from which he could be evacuated by helicopter. The exemplary courage, determination and selfless concern for his fellow soldier’s welfare demonstrated by Private First Class Norles served as an inspiration to the men of his unit and earned him the confidence and respect of all who witnessed his actions. Private First Class Norles’ unquestionable valor while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an insurgent force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
