The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Alvin K. Haney (ASN: 39332163), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 December 1944, in Belgium. When the enemy suddenly subjected their platoon to intense cannon and automatic rifle fire during its attack on a town, Private First Class Haney and a comrade gallantly exposed themselves to the furious fire to spray the enemy with return fire, confusing and partially disorganizing them. As a halftrack was withdrawing its fire killed Private First Class Haney. His heroic self-sacrifice aided in disposing of an overwhelming enemy force and allowed his platoon to take the objective with minimum casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Haney, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
