The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charlie E. Hancock (ASN: 34094074), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 April 1945, in Germany. During an attack by his company the leading elements were held up by the fire of several enemy machine guns firing into the advancing troops. Although in great danger from enemy fire, Staff Sergeant Hancock moved to an exposed position atop a small hill from which to observe the location of the enemy. Remaining in this hazardous position he directed such heavy and accurate fire on the enemy that three machine gun positions were liquidated enabling the attacking troops to push forward swiftly and take their objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Hancock, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
