The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charles P. Gurien (ASN: 20457731), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 September 1944, in Holland. Staff Sergeant Gurien was serving as a squad leader in an infantry rifle company given the mission of protecting an important river position and thwarting any enemy attempts to destroy a vital bridge. At dusk enemy infantrymen were seen approaching. From their manner of approach it was apparent that they did not realize the proximity of the troops. Exposing himself intentionally, Staff Sergeant Gurien observed their every movement and when he was satisfied they were close enough so that they could not escape, he ordered his men to open fire. As a result of Staff Sergeant Gurien’s bravery and ingenuity, the enemy squad was eliminated. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Gurien, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
