The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Clarence L. Guffey, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 85th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 May 1944, in Italy. Lieutenant Guffey made possible the advance of his platoon into a position along a railroad bed by single-handedly attacking and killing an enemy machinegun crew lying in ambush. He tackled the position, killed the crew, and used their weapon to fire upon the withdrawing enemy forces. His courageous action in attacking the enemy emplacement removed the threat of an ambush to our forces and enabled the platoon to take its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
