The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lonnie N. Groves (ASN: 85499395), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 August 1944, in France. When his platoon’s advance was stopped by an enemy machine gun located in a building, Sergeant Groves dashed through heavy fire to a house which faced the enemy position, climbed to an upper story, and scored a direct hit on the position with an anti-tank grenade, and scored a direct hit on the position with an anti-tank grenade. His heroic action silenced the machine gun and enabled his squad to advance without danger. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Groves, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
