The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Clyde W. Grove (ASN: 33067347), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Anti-Tank Company, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 April 1945 in the vicinity of Sprockhovel, Germany. When darkness concealed the position of two enemy tanks forming a road block, and anti-tank fire was unable to be used, Private Grove and three others leaped on the first tank, captured its crew and set the tank afire. Then engaging the crew members of the other tank in a bitter firefight, they successfully disposed of them and captured the tank. Private Grove’s gallant actions and great courage were highly instrumental in the destruction of a vital enemy road block. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
