The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Paul E. Griffin (ASN: 0-545264), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 September 1944, in Holland. While Frist Lieutenant Griffin was patrolling front line positions in his liaison aircraft, he was suddenly attacked by an enemy fighter plane. He succeeded in eluding this enemy craft by skillfully maneuvering his plane at a very low altitude. Undaunted by this encounter, First Lieutenant Griffin returned to complete his vital mission. Approximately thirty minutes later the enemy plane attacked again, and again was foiled by First Lieutenant Griffin’s skillful evasive tactics. The gallantry shown by First Lieutenant Griffin in his willingness to continue his vital observation in the face of attack by heavily armed enemy aircraft is deserving of high praise. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Griffin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
