The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Lincoln Greene (ASN: 0-1315356), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 20 November 1944, in Germany. During an advance on enemy positions, First Lieutenant Greene and his platoon were faced with the hazardous assignment of crossing an open area sixteen hundred yards wide which was so heavily mined that the friendly tanks attempting to cross it had been destroyed. Upon approaching the mine field, First Lieutenant Greene stopped his platoon and heroically crossed it five times; making trails for his platoon. After successfully crossing the field, First Lieutenant Greene in spite of the heavy enemy fire personally placed two of his squads to form a base of fire and then led the other squad to flank the enemy. By his superior tactical skill and courage, First Lieutenant Greene’s company was able to take their objective with very few casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Greene, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
