The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Richard E. Graham (ASN: 35708699), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. Private First Class Graham, a scout, led a six-man patrol to a bridge spanning a canal in Starsbourg, France. As he crawled across the bridge, enemy rifle fire from a house 60 yards ahead, barely missed him and forced all but one other member of the patrol back. Nevertheless, Private First Class Graham continued onward and, at a point 40 yards from the house, charged with a grenade in each hand. He hurled the grenades through two different windows, and then stormed into the house with his rifle blazing. His fire killed one German and forced four others to surrender. As a result of Private First Class Graham’s daring assault, his company gained possession of a valuable outpost. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Graham, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
