The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Lloyd Goudy, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy the vicinity of Anzio, Italy, on 23 May 1944. Boldly leading his platoon over flat open terrain and through intense hostile machine gun fire, Second Lieutenant Goudy’s platoon took forty prisoners and killed several more. Continuing their advance, the platoon encountered an enemy strong point consistingof several machine gun emplacements. Inspired by his previous actions, the platoon followed Second Lieutenant Goudy in an attack on the enemy positions. While leading the assault, First Lieutenant Goudty was fatally wounded. The men, well organized, continued the attack and drove the ememy from their emplacements. The courage and leadership displayed by Second Lieutenant Goudy gained for him the respect and admiration of the men in his platoon. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Goudy, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
