The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas E. Gossard (ASN: 0-1322914), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 October 1944, in Germany. During the advance upon their objective, First Lieutenant Gossard’s platoon was pinned down by enemy machine gun and rifle fire coming from enemy troops about one hundred yards away. First Lieutenant Gossard urged his men forward, but they were unable to move because of the deadly enemy fire. In a gallant attempt to complete his mission, First Lieutenant Gossard crossed over a three-foot, barbed wire fence in total disregard of the enemy machine gun and small arms fire, and advanced on the enemy positions. First Lieutenant Gossard’s daring display of courage and leadership paved the way for the successful completion of his platoon’s mission. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Gossard reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
