Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 187 (July 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James F. Gorman (ASN: 0-1324768), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 July 1944, in France. While advancing, the battalion was pinned down by heavy machine gun fire. First Lieutenant Gorman, seeing that the forward observers were unable to adjust effective fire on the machine gun position, courageously made his way to a position in advance of the foremost elements and under direct enemy observation and withering machine gun fire and adjusted mortar fire on the machine gun position, effectively neutralizing it and permitting his battalion to resume its advance. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Gorman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
