The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Walton Goodwin, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa, in 1943. First Lieutenant Goodwin was in command of a platoon of tanks. His tank was rendered inoperative by an anti-tank mine. He left his tank and proceeded on foot under very heavy and very close enemy fire to a nearby vehicle which was burning furiously. He examined the personnel in the burning vehicle but found they were dead. He then brought a seriously wounded soldier, who had crawled out of the vehicle, back to it and began administering first aid to him. He removed the wounded soldier approximately 25 yards to the rear and then at this point performed a necessary operation on his leg and then removed him to the rear and to safety. The daring and heroic actions, complete disregard for personal welfare, and devotion to duty displayed by First Lieutenant Goodwin reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the armed forces and are deserving of the highest praise.
