The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Raymond M. Goodspeed (ASN: 32475102), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action on 26 June 1944, in Italy. Leading a three-man reconnaissance patrol forward to gain contact with the enemy, Sergeant Goodspeed and his comrades were suddenly ambushed. The concentrated enemy machine gun and small arms fire immediately killed one o member of the patrol and seriously wounded another. Aware of the small chance of their getting back safely, Sergeant Goodspeed nevertheless placed the wounded man on his back and started to work his way back. When he arrived within 200 yards of his company he was mortally wounded by the enemy fire. The courage and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Goodspeed saved his comrades life, and his actions gained for him the respect and admiration of his entire company.
