The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private] James W. Goodman (ASN: 19028562), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Goodman’s squad, an element of an infantry battalion which was completely isolated by the enemy in their desperate attempt to divide the American Forces in Brittany from those in Normandy, was suddenly attacked. The intensity of the attack was so great that the squad became disorganized and the squad leader became a casualty. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Staff Sergeant Goodman immediately assumed command of the squad, reorganized them and led his men through intense small arms fire in an attack on the enemy. Having driven the enemy back, there was a dire need for a road block. He then incorporated the remaining men of his squad with another platoon and helped in the organization of this vital position. Although wounded, he remained with his men, and by his superior leadership and bravery prevented his squad from possible annihilation, and made it possible for them to bolster the strength of their company so vitally needed at this time. The high degree of initiative, bravery, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Goodman are outstanding. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Goodman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
