The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Clarence Edward Gooding, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France, on 12 September 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Gooding led a rescue party into an exposed area to evacuate a wounded officer and enlisted man who were lying in an area which was being raked by enemy machinegun and artillery fire. The return with the wounded men was made under enemy observation for a distance of 200 yards and under increased enemy fire. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Gooding, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
