The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) Edward L. Goldberg (ASN: 0-1018899), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 744th Light Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 24 March 1945 to 25 March 1945, in Germany. First Lieutenant Goldberg led a tank platoon which overran an enemy town, destroying three artillery pieces, numerous machine guns, and killing or capturing a large number of the enemy. On the following day, his platoon again overran many enemy positions destroying three anti-tank guns and capturing sixty prisoners. While he was gallantly leading his men, First Lieutenant Goldberg’s tank was struck by direct anti-tank fire which killed him. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Goldberg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
