(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Staff Sergeant Joseph Goggin, Jr., United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 85th Infantry Division in Italy, during World War II. When all members of his infantry squad were wounded, Sergeant Goggin, realizing that the entire company was exposed to enemy machine gun fire, stole around the enemy flank to their rear and opened fire. He killed two Germans and forced the rest to surrender, while his company, unopposed, moved safely to a position from which it seized its objective.
