The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Curtis L. Gilbertson (ASN: 37579770), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 March 1945, in Germany. While Private First Class Gilbertson, a radio operator, and his battalion commander were reconnoitering the battalion’s lines of departure for a forthcoming attack, the sector was suddenly subjected to a heavy concentration of enemy mortar, rocket, and artillery fire. Taking shelter in a slit trench, Private First Class Gilbertson continued to maintain radio contact with the rear. Finding that his position prevented a clear reception, he moved into the open where he was completely exposed to deadly artillery air bursts and courageously continued operating his radio until wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Gilbertson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
