The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harold Leon Gilbert (ASN: 39258589), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 August 1944, in France. Private First Class Gilbert distinguished himself during a fierce enemy counterattack supported by mortar and artillery fire against his company. Although it meant exposing himself o the enemy fire, Private First Class Gilbert, a gunner in a machine gun squad, deliberately remained at his weapon and brought devastating fire to bear on the attacking enemy. He continued firing until he was mortally wounded, but his inspiring courage aided in inflicting such severe casualties on the enemy that they were forced to withdraw. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Gilbert, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
