Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 184 (August 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Lloyd E. Gibson (ASN: 3958776), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 January 1945, in France. When his company’s attack was halted by intense cross-fire from enemy machine guns, Sergeant Gibson volunteered to attempt to eliminate the enemy guns. In crawling forward toward the enemy positions, he observed and eliminated two enemy riflemen. Although wounded, he continued crawling forward until he could fire on the enemy positions. His accurate fire neutralized one machine gun position, killing two and wounding the third member of the crew, and forced the withdrawal of the crew to the other gun. Only after this was accomplished and his platoon had taken the objective, did he submit to medical treatment. The tenacity of purpose and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Gibson reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
