The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Grady B. Gibbs (ASN: 34008439), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Gibbs was serving as the Intelligence Sergeant with an Infantry Regiment and discovered at daybreak that his position had been isolated by infiltrating enemy troops who were beginning to launch a large-scale counterattack. Fully realizing the apparent hopelessness of the situation, Staff Sergeant Gibbs nevertheless, dismissed all ideas of surrender, although he was completely surrounded, and instead elected to fight his way to friendly lines. Using outstanding leadership and bravery, Staff Sergeant Gibbs kept his men together and led them in the fight through enemy-held terrain back to friendly lines. The indomitable fighting spirit and conspicuous daring exhibited by his courageous actions enabled ten men to rescue themselves from an apparently hopeless situation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Gibbs, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
