The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert Scott German (ASN: 37247874), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant German was serving as a squad leader with an infantry organization which was engaged in bitter fighting with a stubborn foe. Enemy fire scored a direct hit on a supporting tank, causing it to burn. Two members of the tank crew were wounded and trapped within the tank. Despite the exploding ammunition from the magazine with complete disregard for his personal safety, Staff Sergeant German voluntarily climbed into the blazing tank and extricated the two wounded men. By his daring, Staff Sergeant German saved the life of two of his fellow soldiers. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant German, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
