The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Howard L. Gelfer (ASN: 32647100), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 January 1945, in Belgium. Corporal Gelfer was a liaison corporal for a forward observation party which was discovered by the enemy and subjected to intense artillery and small arms fire. Although added rocket fire came extremely close, he remained steadfast until he was killed in a burst of heavy fire. Corporal Gelfer’s gallant action at the cost of his life aided the infantry in later accomplishing its mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Gelfer were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
