The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Paul Gebauer, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Chaplain with the 14th Armored Division, in action against the enemy near Forscheim, Germany, on 26 April 1945. Observing the distress of several wounded officers and men, Chaplain Gebauer, voluntarily and without regard for his personal safety, and amidst a devastating enemy artillery barrage, left his position of cover and rushed to their aid. Remaining in an exposed position, he administered emergency medical treatment and directed the evacuation of stricken men to safety. Chaplain Gebauer’s cheer, courage, and unselfish devotion to duty reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest military traditions.
