The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Louis A. Gaybrant (ASN: RA-42010683), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, a large force of enemy troops employing small-arms and automatic-weapons fire, attacked Company G’s defensive positions near Kungp-yong-ni, Korea. During this action, Corporal Gaybrant, occupying a forward position and realizing that support fire was needed, fearlessly exposed himself to the devastating enemy fire as he maneuvered into open terrain to call for machine-gun support fire from a Company H emplacement, defending Company G’s right flank. As the friendly machine-gun responded to his fire directions, Corporal Gaybrant fired his weapon and threw hand grenades at the hostile force, thus defeating each assault wave until he was ordered to withdraw. Corporal Gaybrant’s inspiring and heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
