The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Louis A. Gaybrant (ASN: 42010683), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 July 1944, near ****, France. When Private Gaybrant’s platoon was pinned down by furious enemy machine gun fire, wholly unmindful of his own safety, he moved up and down the line from man to man encouraging them and maintaining their fighting spirit. During the reorganization of the unit, Private Gaybrant remained in front and covered the group by firing rifle grenades at the enemy. Private Gaybrant’s heroic devotion to duty and his inspiring disregard for personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.

Gaybrant (ASN: RA-42010683), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, a large force of enemy troops employing small-arms and automatic-weapons fire, attacked Company G’s defensive positions near Kungp-yong-ni, Korea. During this action, Corporal Gaybrant, occupying a forward position and realizing that support fire was needed, fearlessly exposed himself to the devastating enemy fire as he maneuvered into open terrain to call for machine-gun support fire from a Company H emplacement, defending Company G’s right flank. As the friendly machine-gun responded to his fire directions, Corporal Gaybrant fired his weapon and threw hand grenades at the hostile force, thus defeating each assault wave until he was ordered to withdraw. Corporal Gaybrant’s inspiring and heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
