The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John A. Garvey (ASN: 32083979), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 February 1945, in the vicinity of Duren, Germany. During a night attack on a German garrison, Sergeant Garvey successfully led his men through intensive tank destroyer fire striking the buildings directly in front of their position, and made a second trip to lead other squads through safely. Although wounded, he refused evacuation until the capture of the barracks was complete. Sergeant Garvey’s great courage and unselfish disregard for his personal safety reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
