The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Dan C. Garrott (ASN: 35713849), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division from 7 August 1944 to 12 August 1944, in France. Corporal Garrett was assigned to duty with a field artillery unit, serving in the capacity of instrument operator. A fierce enemy counterattack succeeded in isolating the unit with which Corporal Garrett was on duty. Supplies hidden in a well-concealed truck several hundred yards away were desperately needed. Despite the fact that it necessitated running a gauntlet of fire over an area known to be held by enemy forces, Corporal Garrott voluntarily and with complete disregard for his own safety alone made the hazardous trip and returned with the needed supplies. On another occasion, under similar circumstances, Corporal Garrott ran a second gauntlet of fire to procure first aid for a wounded comrade. The personal bravery and heroic devotion to duty exhibited by Corporal Garrott reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
