The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Louis H. Garrison (ASN: 34720220), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 August 1944, in France. When his unit was pinned down by fire from an enemy artillery piece that friendly counter-battery fire could not reach, Private First Class Garrison with two comrades volunteered to attempt to destroy the hostile gun. Armed with bazookas, Private First Class Garrison and his companions crossed open terrain, subjected to intense enemy fire, until they succeeded in reaching a point that gave them a good view of the hostile gun. From there all three fired their weapons at the gun and destroyed it. Private First Class Garrison’s inspiring courage and aggressiveness in helping to carry out this action prevented a number of casualties and enabled his unit to complete its mission successfully. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Garrison, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
