The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jack Furman, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 24th Infantry Division, in action at Breakneck Ridge, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 13 November 1944. Private Furman was twice wounded in action against the enemy but insisted on staying with his unit. Later the same day, while the company was halted at the battalion command post on its way back to a rest area, the battalion command post received a surprise attack by a strong Japanese force. Private Furman rushed at once to the outer perimeter where his fire was instrumental in silencing a Japanese machine gun. His resourceful actions were an inspiration to his unit throughout the campaign.
