The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Dale Ellsworth Funk (ASN: 34024500), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 June 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Funk was assigned to duty with an infantry assault group engaged in an extremely fierce battle with the enemy. During the fight, when he saw one of his comrades fall, Staff Sergeant Funk crawled over an exposed area subjected to continuing artillery, mortar, and small arms fire in order to administer first aid and evacuate the wounded man. This unselfish and gallant act, performed at the risk of his life, saved the life of the wounded soldier. The fortitude, aggressive loyalty, and determined devotion to his comrades displayed by Staff Sergeant Funk reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
