(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Charles Elder Frederick (ASN: 0-18591), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in October 1943 at Monte Della Costa, Italy. Lieutenant Colonel Frederick led a personal reconnaissance accompanied by a couple of men along a brush-covered hillside. Shortly thereafter there was a burst of small arms fire from an enemy patrol that ambushed his reconnaissance party, and Lieutenant Colonel Frederick was mortally wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Frederick, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
