The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade John C. Franklin (ASN: 39107386), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 September 1944, in Holland. Technician Fourth Grade Franklin was a member of a party which came under intense artillery fire while it was repairing an assault gun. Learning that a man had been wounded, Technician Fourth Grade Franklin and a comrade raced through the shell fire to the casualty and carried him to a vehicle where they gave first aid. Their gallant action saved the wounded man’s life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fourth Grade Franklin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
